You can't buy a truly precision tactical scope without spending over a thousand dollars, right? Incorrect. Vortex Optics listened to the naysayers and did just that. The Vortex Viper PST (Precision Shooting Tactical) rifle scope is built with tactical precision in mind, all for under a thousand dollars.

Interested? I thought so. In this article I will review the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 and explain in detail how Vortex Optics can deftly mix tactical with precision.

In a hurry? Here is the summary of the review of the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50.

Vortex is a brand I have no trouble talking about. If you have read any of my other articles you will see my admiration for the brand. Through various interactions from my own and other competitive shooters I know, Vortex has always risen to the occasion.

The Vortex Viper PST is an example of Vortex once again rising to the occasion. Not only were they able to create a precision tactical scope, they went one step further by making it a dual purpose hunting and tactical application scope.

I found the Vortex Viper PST to be a quality hunting scope, yet to use it in a tactical situation. However, I really enjoyed using the exposed tactical-style turrets in the field. The turrets were easy to set and easy to read behind my rifle.

I will review the Vortex Viper PST in detail and evaluate what is included and excluded with your purchase. I will go through both the pros and cons of this range offered by Vortex and offer the technical specifications to which the Viper PST is built.

The Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 is a top-class rifle scope. The Viper line of riflescopes are designed to be rugged, performance-oriented riflescopes that have made a positive impression on the hunting community since their introduction in 2004.

With a weight of 23.4 ounces and a length of 15.5 inches, the compact lightweight was deliberately considered. With a magnification range of 6-24x, this is a great scope for long range shooting.

The Viper PST has a lens diameter of 50mm and uses a second focal plane design, which I'll reluctantly elaborate on later in this article. Machined from a single block of aircraft-grade 6061-T6 aluminum, the Viper PST delivers performance that tactical shooters enjoy.

Vortex adjusted the Viper PST's reticle and turret dimensions, allowing for quick and accurate adjustments. One feature I really liked was the Adjustable Rotation Stop (CRS). The CRS is an adjustable zero stop that helps return to zero after dialing a temporary altitude correction.

The CRS is a unique feature that adds to the list of features of the Viper PST, which is specifically designed for tactical shooters. Also included for tactical shooters is the fiber optic turret rotation indicator that provides a visible reference point.

The Viper PST's eye relief is four inches, and the maximum windage and elevation adjustment is 65 MOA. With an adjustable zero stop, rotation indicator, and exposed turrets, Vortex scopes have never failed to impress me.

The legendary VIP Guarantee (very important promise) is included with every purchase of Vortex Optic. Vortex will repair or replace your oscilloscope product if it is damaged or defective. No cost to you, no receipt, unlimited lifetime warranty transfers to any future Vortex Oscilloscope owner.

Vortex goes so far as to offer you a scope of greater or equal value if they cannot repair your scope. Essentially, you can keep a Vortex scope for life after you buy it, knowing that your scope will be fully covered.

What's in the package:

Aside from the Vortex Viper PST, there are other items that Vortex will add to your package when you purchase a PST. Aside from the extra goodies in your package, there are a few items you need to purchase to enable the assembly of your new Viper PST. Purchasing a Vortex Viper PST does not include a mounting system to attach your scope to your rifle.

You still need to purchase a scope ring set and base to attach the scope rings to your scope and mount. You can find high quality scope rings and base mount systems on Amazon or Optikplanet. Here is a list of the goodies included with the purchase of a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50.

  • 4 inch sunshade
  • CR2032-Batterie
  • CRS Shims (adjustable rotation stop)
  • lens cloth

Key Features:

The Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 has many attractive features. In the features, we see Vortex's intended dual purpose for this area. With a magnification range of 6-24x, it might be obvious that the Viper PST was built for long-range shooting, but the reticle, internal systems and durability demonstrate the scope's tactical applications.

Glass etched reticle

With some scopes, reticle design is a make-it-or-break-it for shooters. The Vortex Viper PST reticle features Vortex's patented fully multi-coated XR glass that increases light transmission.

The reticle is based on a second focal plane design (SFP) instead of a first focal plane design (FFP). This means the reticle stays the same size across the entire magnification range. I don't appreciate the SFP design as the range, holdover and wind drift corrections listed are only accurate at full magnification.

This is extremely frustrating as an FFP oscilloscope has accurate markings throughout the magnification range. Preferences aside, the glass-etched EBR-1 reticle in the Viper PST allows for more complicated reticle designs and is protected between two layers of glass. The eyepiece is comfortable and standard on most Vortex scopes.

The EBR-1 (Enhanced Battle Reticle) is a hash-marked range reticle that uses MOA-based undervoltage lines for range, holdover and windage corrections. The EBR-1 in the Viper PST is an illuminated reticle that allows for precise aiming in low light conditions.

Tactical internal design

One theme I don't see in many riflescope reviews is the internal systems that allow the scope to perform as well as it does. All exterior design and material is important, don't get me wrong, but all of that would be for naught if the inside of the scope was junk.

Part of the durable interior design of the Vortex Viper PST is the aforementioned CRS zero stop. A customizable zero stop is a valuable benefit Vortex added with tactical shooters in mind. Vortex also incorporated a precision spring system into the Viper PST that ensures shot repeatability.

A scope is only as good as its zero point. If the zero cannot be held or repeated, you can also use an iron sight. The attention riflescope manufacturers give to keeping zero and having shot repeatability speaks volumes about their quality of work.

The precision sliding system built into the Viper PST ensures that the moving parts in the zoom lens slide smoothly through the magnification ranges. Vortex Optics considered every situation and detail when building the Viper PST, making it suitable for both hunting and tactical shooting. You can shoot with confidence when using a Vortex scope.

Durability is achieved in a variety of ways with the Viper PST. The Vortex Viper uses a one-piece aircraft-grade aluminum tube for strength and durability. This provides additional strength over multi-piece scopes due to the construction of the design.

The Viper PST's lenses are fully multi-coated, delivering great detail and color suitable for hunting in any lighting environment. O-ring seals prevent dust and dirt from entering the scope glass.

This makes the Vortex Viper PST fully waterproof, and the rugged design makes the scope shock and impact resistant. Utilizing argon gas purging, the Viper PST is also anti-fog and the hard-anodized finish provides a low-glare matte finish to conceal your position.

For and against:

  • Glass etched reticle
  • Parallax lateral focus
  • durability
  • Preis

  • Second level of focus (some people prefer it)

The Bushnell Tac Optic is a great alternative to the Vortex Viper PST as it shares a common purpose in design. Both scopes offer 6x to 24x magnification with a 50mm lens. Both optics are also designed for tactical and precise shooting with slightly different characteristics. The Tac Optic is built to last and Bushnell offers a lifetime ironclad warranty.

Final Thoughts:

After reading this article, you will have learned how the Vortex Viper PST fulfills both the tactical and hunting applications it was designed for. A great glass etched reticle coupled with great interior and exterior design.

The Viper PST is built tough for use in the field but is finely tunable like a high quality scope and seems to do it all. If you are looking for a long range hunting or tactical scope, put the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 on your shortlist.

The Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 is a great combination of tactical skill and hunting precision. Coupled with Vortex's legendary VIP warranty, the Viper PST is a quality scope that has all the bases covered.
