Plants occupy one of the five kingdoms of life. Plants usually make their own food and are immobile (regardless of growth), but have you ever thought of plants being carnivorous? Yes, you read that right - carnivorous plants. These are also known as insectivorous plants. The famous British naturalist Charles Darwin published a book entitled Insectivorous Plants on July 2, 1875 in London.

Carnivorous plants get most of their nutrients from their prey. They typically feed on insects and other arthropods. These plants' unique ability to grow in acidic swamps and thin-soil rocky outcrops and their ability to thrive in a nitrogen-poor environment sets them apart from other plant species.

True carnivores have arisen independently in five different orders of flowering plants, and include the classification of at least 583 species. 1. Nepenthes Hamata

Nepenthes hamata is a tropical pitcher plant native to Sulawesi. This plant features an inner chamber and pitfalls that attract prey with nectar bribes in the jug. The linings of these pitcher plants are coated with wax flakes that make it slippery for insects to fall into the pitcher. Digestive enzymes are secreted within the pitcher to break down the prey into a form the plant can absorb.

These plants are native to southern China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines including areas west of Madagascar and the Seychelles; south to Australia and New Caledonia; and northward to India and Sri Lanka. 2. Roridula Gorgonien

Roridula gorgonias is a protocarnivorous plant native to South Africa. This plant secretes mucilage, an adhesive substance used to trap insects, is extremely sticky, durable, and water-tolerant. The carnivorous plant is known for its beautiful pink flowers and sticky leaves. The perennial shrub can grow to 1m or more and the leaves are alternate and narrow, growing up to 120mm in length and appearing crowded at the branch tips. The leaves are covered with sticky hairs and can catch many small insects, but rarely can catch large insects such as wasps and bees.

Dionaea is a carnivorous plant that grows on the east coast of the United States in North and South Carolina. This plant is structured to have bulbous leaves covered with triggered hairs on their inner surfaces. The trap closes once an insect or spider comes into contact with the hairs and secretes a digestive enzyme to digest the prey. The trap will open again once digestion is complete.

The carnivorous plant takes a week to be digested by larger insects. When the prey is caught, the flytrap secretes a liquid much like a human stomach works. The digestive system of the plant species is slow, it takes about 10 days to digest the insect and reopen its trap. 4. Utricularia vulgaris

Utricularia is also known as water hose. They grow in fresh water and moist soil on every continent except Antarctica. These carnivorous plants trap small organisms with bubble-like traps, creating pressure from the inside to the outside of the bubbles as the water moves. As soon as the animal touches the bristles on the surface of the door, the trap opens quickly and a gush of water sucks the prey inside. The door is closed and the animal is digested. The carnivorous plant has about 230 species and mostly thrives in freshwater and moist soil as a terrestrial or aquatic species. 5. Darlingtonia Californica

Also known as California pitcher plant or cobra lily, Darlingtonia californica is found in northern California and Oregon. The name Cobra Lily is derived because this plant's tubular leaves resemble a rearing cobra and a forked leaf with that of a snake's fangs. The specialized structures within the plant increase prey's chances of entering the trap to find food, and fan-like appendages have nectar glands that help move prey into the inner pitcher chamber for the plant to kill the prey and complete its digestion can procedure.

Speaking of looks, the carnivorous plant has tubular leaves and contains liquid that can digest trapped insects. The end of the leaf is hooded and has a circular opening that allows insects to fly into the hood. The plant was discovered by botanist William D. Brackenridge on Mount Shasta in 1841. Later in 1853 it was described by John Torrey, who named the genus Darlingtonia after the Philadelphia botanist William Darlington (1782–1863).

6. Drosera Rotundifolia

Drosera rotundifolia was also known as the round-leaved sundew and is found throughout North America, Korea and Japan. The leaves of this plant look like a mucus-covered rosette, loaded with a sugary substance to attract prey and secreting digestive enzymes to obtain nutrients. Also known as sundews are carnivorous plants that use viscous mucilage called slime to catch and digest their prey. The species has at least 188 species and is found all over the world except Antarctica. There are few years that can grow for two or more years, however, the rest can only grow for a year and propagate by seeds.

7. Byblis

Byblis are commonly referred to as rainbow plants and typically grow in Western Australia. The surface of the leaves of these species are covered with glandular hairs and mucilage to attract prey. These leaves are secrets of digestive enzymes because they are endowed with sessile glands.

8. Aldrovanda Vesiculosa

Also known as the water wheel plant, Aldrovanda is found in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. 9. Cephalotus follicularis

Cephalotus follicularis is an Australian pitcher plant and has a very small distribution in south west Australia. The trapping mechanism is similar to that of pitcher plants. The entrance of the trap has a spiked arrangement that lets the prey in and hinders their return, and the lid of the entrance prevents rainwater from entering the jar, diluting the digestive enzymes to absorb the nutrients from the prey.

10. Brocchinia Reducta

Brocchinia reducta is native to Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia and Guyana. These species form a water storage cup with their overlapping leaves. These leaves are covered with loose, waxy scales and reflect ultraviolet light. Most insects are attracted to ultraviolet rays, and these water cups also emit a sweet smell that attracts and eventually drowns prey. The digestive enzymes and bacteria support the digestion process and the nutrients are absorbed by the leaves.
