The 3-valve Ford 5.4 Triton featured two intake valves and one exhaust valve per cylinder.
While it sounds inefficient, the company was able to manage enough flow with a larger-than-normal single exhaust valve. Common Ford 5.4 Triton problems
With the Ford 5.4 Triton, the company has entered uncharted territory. It came with technology that was not new to the automaker, but state of the art for the time. As a result, this led to some inconsistencies that have become some of the common issues with the Ford 5.4 Triton. Timing chain and VVT problem
The Ford 5.4 Triton has proven to be an impressive engine that strikes a good balance between performance and reliability. However, there are some areas where it can go wrong. One of these areas is related to the timing chain,timing chain tensioner, Icam phasing system. Since cam phasing or VVT only occurs on a 3-valve engine, this problem is reserved for it.
Sometimes the Ford 5.4 Triton 3-valve engine can have timing problems. This can happen because the timing chain has come loose. This problem can occur due to damage to the timing chain itself or the tensioner. If this is the case, synchronization issues may occur, and this may cause VVT issues. This issue has led to cases of cam phaser failure.

Ignition system failure
Another widely reported problem with the Ford 5.4 Triton has to do with its ignition system. As mentioned earlier, this motor uses a coil-on-plug arrangement. While it was a novelty back then, it is very common now. For the 2-valve and 3-valve Ford 5.4 Triton, the so-calledthe rubber caps on the coil covers would start to crackdue to factors such as heat. The consequence of this was an inefficient spark.
The Ford 5.4 Triton is unable to get the required spark as it would hit the plug well instead of the plug. This can lead to misfires and loss of power. While this may sound like a serious problem, it is nowhere near as serious as the timing chain problem mentioned above. This problem can be solved by replacing the ignition coils, which is quite simple and inexpensive. In fact, it is worth replacing spark plugs and ignition coils from time to time.
Fuel pump driver module
Another common problem with the Ford 5.4 Triton is the fuel pump driver module. This module, as the name suggests, is responsible for the operation of the fuel pump. Interestingly, nothing wrong with the module. The problem is its location. Ford thought it would be a good idea to mount it on a steel frame underneath the vehicle. that meantwas exposed to the elements.
Dirt, water, salt and snow would be in constant contact with this module. As you can imagine, this can be damaging to an electrical component, and it was. This would cause parts to fail over time, which would cut off the fuel supply and shut down the engine. Ford eventually fixed this issue, so it's a good idea to check the fuel pump driver module if you're buying an early copy.
Bad oil pan gasket
This common problem with the Ford 5.4 Triton should come as no surprise considering its age. Early versions of the engine are approaching the 25-year mark and you can expect the seals to break, especially on higher mileage units. Surprisingly, the oil pan gasket is the only one known to fail. This cannot be considered a fault as the seals are not designed to last forever.
